Ben Mandelbaums has recently separated from his wife and is living with his elderly father. Audrey Martin is his high school crush and she has just recently moved down the street. This novel explores how these two people intersect and the resulting drama. The first half of the book is narrated from the point of view of Ben and his father. I found Ben to be a not very likable character but I am wondering if being inside the head of a brutally honest man was just a bit too disconcerting. He seeks out Audrey, who is not very happily married, and begins an intense and seedy association. The second half of the book takes on the narration of Audrey and her family and that is when you begin to piece together what really happened during the course of the first half. This is extremely well-written and entertaining. The characters really fall low over the course of the novel but in the end are left with hope of redeeming themselves without the pieces being tied together too neatly. I received an copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
