Local Girls by Caroline Zancan
Pub. Date - June 30, 2015
3.5 stars

Four friends grow up in a neighborhood outside of Orlando find their lives disrupted after an unfortunate incident changes the ties of their friendship.  Separately following their exploits as teenagers and their drunken night out with movie star right after graduation, this novel excels at creating realistic and fleshed out characters.  Each fully developed character's voice and actions stay true to their unique personality throughout the novel.  The city of Orlando and its surrounding suburbs was on brilliant display here where the stigma of being a local amongst tourists weighs on the main narrator of the book.  My only problem was the prodding plot that wasn't quite as tense as it could have been.  There are two fairly significant events that occur in the book but they felt kind of sleepy and not quite emotionally charged.  Overall, this is a good book about growing up in Florida and changing friendships in the face of trauma.  I received this book from Penguin's First to Read program in exchange for an honest review.
