Secrets of a Teenage Life - May 24, 2015

Hyacinth Girls by Lauren Frankel
4.5 stars

I honestly hadn't heard anything else about this book when I started reading and now I find it very surprising that it hasn't received more attention.  Callie is a fourteen year old girl who has been raised by her aunt after a horrible tragedy that left both of her parents dead.  The book begins from the aunt, Rebecca's, point of view.  She describes Callie's increasingly strange behavior and you can feel Rebecca's confusion and disbelief as she tries to sort out allegations of bullying against Callie and Callie's own version of events.  This part also delves into her deep and co-dependent friendship with Callie's mom when she was a teenager herself.  The second part is the same series of events from Callie's point of view and shows the disconnect from what an adult sees going on and what is actually occurring in the teenager's life.  There is a tremendous about of bullying and terrifying behavior.  I did find that at times, the extent of terror inflicted by these teenage girls defied belief but overall I thought this was an incredibly engrossing and fascinating look into a teenage girl's experience being bullied.  I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for an honest review.
