This ended up being a much different read than I thought it would be. Instead of an evil genius that ruined lives and left misery, Sophie Stark turned out to be a sad artistic savant who suffered from an undiagnosed illness/syndrome and didn't get the help that she so desperately needed. I thought this to be a very beautiful account of one person who felt that she didn't belong in the normal world and could only hope to connect to other's through her movies. The loved ones that were left dealing with the aftermath of seeing their most painful pasts on the screen never know how to feel about this damaged woman and always felt a mix of attraction and repulsion. I thought this was beautifully written, and since the book was never narrated by Sophie herself the reader is left with only left with impressions of her. I actually thought it could have been a little longer with more perspectives, but overall I really enjoyed this book. I received an electronic galley of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Romancing the Earl by Darcy Burke
3 stars

Catriona is one of a handful of lady antiquaries who is in search of a map leading to a Arthurian treasure. It is thought to be in the hands of a newly appointed earl, Elijah Hollister, who is figuring out how to transition from the military to the nobility while paying his late brother's debt. As they work together to find the ancient tapestry, an adventurous romance develops. I thought that this book had great romantic build-up and I liked both characters, however, I did think that the plot moved incredibly slow and it took me a surprisingly long time to finish. So while I thought it had an interesting premise, it might have been more enjoyable if it moved at a faster pace. I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
